Where do you start? What do you need to know to be safe?
Caswell’s Introduction to Handguns course is a course designed for those individuals with little-to-no handgun experience. Following the classroom instruction, students will have the opportunity to practice the skills learned in class with live-fire experience.
If you are a beginner with little-to-no experience, this is the class for you.
2-3 hours class including range time
Focus Areas:
- Universal Firearm Safety
- Different types of handguns
- Types of ammunition
- Safe loading and unloading procedures
- Live-fire exercises to demonstrate proper loading and unloading and safe
- handling procedures learned
Equipment Required:
- Class requires eye and ear protection and at least 50 rounds of ammunition for the firearm you will use.
- Handguns may be rented at no cost but will require you to purchase Caswell’s range ammunition for use.
Intro to Handguns (P100)

Fundamental Shooting Skills (P200)

This course is designed around learning the fundamental skills behind shooting handguns both safely and accurately, and is the second-level class in the Caswells Pistol Curriculum. The Fundamental Shooting Skills course is 4 hours with a high instructor-to-student ratio, allowing for close, personal hands-on attention while still being in a relaxed classroom environment. Course instruction includes classroom work, hands on dry-fire practice and live-fire practice. This class is designed for anyone that cannot shoot consistent 2” groups at 21ft.

Focus Areas:
- Excellent for beginners to intermediate shooters
- Key fundamental features include grip, proper operation of your firearm, stance, sight alignment, and trigger squeeze
- Learn and review universal firearm safety
- Practice one of the hardest to master skills – trigger control
- Excellent review for seasoned shooters that have not been shooting for a while and would like to group their rounds within 2 inches at 21ft
- Skills required for students interested in moving on to the more advanced shooting courses

- Class requires eye and ear protection and at least 100 rounds of ammunition for the firearm you will use
- Handguns may be rented at no cost but will require you to purchase Caswell’s range ammunition for use
Practical Shooting Skills (P300)

The Practical Shooting course is the third in the sequence of handgun instruction at Caswells. It builds upon the skills found in the Fundamental Shooting course and on your own personal experience. Our Practical Shooting Skills course focuses on the more complex movements required for advanced level shooting. The class is up to 5 hours in one day or broken up over two days, and includes classroom work, hands-on dry-fire practice and live-fire drills while working through malfunctions under stress.
1 hour class time, remainder is range time
Class Prerequisites:
- Students must have the basic skills required to safely load unload and operate their firearm without any assistance and be able to consistently shoot 4” groups at 21ft
- Students MUST have all appropriate equipment and gear prior to attending this course
- Failure to meet these guidelines will prohibit you from attending the course
Focus Areas:
- Proper methods to draw from the holster (Strong Side)
- Accuracy with shooting the first shot from the holster
- Multi-round shots & follow through
- Appropriate sight picture at various target distances
- Advanced reloading techniques, advanced malfunction clearances
- Shooting under stress and follow through assessment
Equipment Required:
- Class requires eye and ear protection
- Semi-automatic pistol with 3 magazines and spare magazine carrier or a revolver with 3 speed loaders and carrier for speed loaders
- A quality strong-side OWB holster that has 2 points of contact and does not collapse (no shoulder holsters, purse holsters, or appendix carry)
Defensive Handgun Skills (P400)

5-6 hours
The Defensive Handgun Skills course is the fourth in the sequence of handgun instruction at Caswells and builds upon the skills found in the Practical Shooting Skills course. The class is 5 to 6 hours one day or broken up over two days, and includes classroom work, hands-on dry-fire practice and live-fire drills.
1 hour class time, remainder is range time
Class Prerequisites:
- Students must have the basic skills required to safely load unload and operate their firearm without any assistance and be able to consistently shoot 4” groups at 21ft
- Students MUST have all appropriate equipment and gear prior to attending this course
- Failure to meet these guidelines will prohibit you from attending the course
- Successful completion of P300
Focus Areas:
- Will include all previously learned skills (now incorporating flashlight manipulation)
- Draw stroke can include concealment if you choose
- Advanced reloading & malfunction drills
- Basic shooting with cover/concealment
- Basic low light shooting techniques
Equipment Required:
- Class requires eye and ear protection and at least 500 rounds of ammunition for the handgun you will use
- Semi-automatic pistol with 3 magazines and spare magazine carrier or a revolver with 3 speed loaders and carrier for speed loaders
- A quality strong-side holster that has two points of contact and does not collapse for this course (no shoulder holsters, purse holsters, or appendix carry)
- Hand held flashlight that uses a momentary switch only, not an on/off switch
Tactical Handgun Skills (P500)

7-8 hours
The Tactical Handgun Skills course is the fifth in the sequence of handgun instruction at Caswells. This class builds upon the skills found in the Defensive Handgun Skills course. The class is 7 to 8 hours one day or broken up over two days, and includes classroom work, hands on dry-fire practice and live-fire drills.
1 hour class time, remainder is range time
Class Prerequisites:
- Students must have the basic skills required to safely load unload and operate their firearm without any assistance and be able to consistently shoot 4” groups at 21ft
- Students MUST have all appropriate equipment and gear prior to attending this course
- Failure to meet these guidelines will prohibit you from attending the course
- Successful completion of P400
Focus Areas:
- Advanced shooting with movement/low light
- Advanced shooting with cover/concealment/low light
- Advanced low light shooting techniques
- Lose quarter/retention shooting
- Searching/assessing techniques
Equipment Required:
- Class requires eye and ear protection and at least 500 rounds of ammunition for the handgun you will use
- Semi-automatic pistol with 3 magazines and spare magazine carrier or a revolver with 3 speed loaders and carrier for speed loaders
- A quality strong side holster that has two points of contact and does not collapse (no shoulder holsters, purse holsters, or appendix carry)
- Hand held flashlight that uses a momentary switch only, not an on/off switch
All instructors for this course are required to have NRA Certification,
and/ or have prior Military, Law Enforcement or competitive shooting backgrounds.
